My friend, daughter and I, before a saturday afternoon of shopping, decided on pupusas for lunch. One, because my daughter had never tried them and two, my friend and I love them.
Pupuseria Maya is located on a strip mall, next to a clinic on Michigan. You have to be vigilant or you will pass it like we almost did. It is a small place, I counted maybe 6 tables and a counter and with less than stellar lighting (not good for photos). I would suggest maybe better lighting.
Pupusas are traditional Salvadoran dish, thick corn tortilla stuffed with a savory fillings, such as chicken, pork, cheese or all mixed together. We ordered two order of mixtas and my daughter ordered just cheese. Pupusas are served with "curtido", it is a spicy cabbage slaw, the cabbage sliced very thin. To drink, just water with lemon. We did not want anything to interfere with the taste of our food.
We were served promptly. The pupusas, three to a dish, were piping hot and smelled amazing. The curtido looked a little wilted but was very tasty and the spicy not too bad. The pupusas were really tasty, the filling was even throughout the tortilla. The mixture of chicken, pork and cheese was nicely balanced. I just wished the tortillas were thicker and the filling meatier.
The reason for the three stars, the tortillas could have been thicker and the server never returned to refill our water glasses. We were dry and could not get her attention.
Try this place, the food is good. -

Small Mom and pops restaurant with very friendly staff/service. The food is good, you might as well try their pupusas as it is their specialty and they are good.
Downside for me was the restrooms, they had a bad smell. So don't just keep in mind that it is a very low key restaurant. -

I think it was too pricey for the quality of food, the repollo looked a bit old and brownish, the fried yuca was dry and the Pupusas not as fat and full as expected for the price. I've had better.

My friend was craving pupusas so we found this restaurant on Yelp. I never had pupusas and not the biggest fan of corn tortilla but I am always open to try new things.
We went around 2pm on a Friday and it was empty. Cute little restaurant. The server talked to us in Spanish...thank goodness my friend spoke Spanish or else I would have been lost.
I ordered two pupusas. The chicharron and the pork and cheese one. They were both delicious! The coleslaw cabbage on top with the hot sauce makes a nice combination of flavors. My friend was super satisfied as she was finally able to fulfill her cravings for pupusas.
The pupusas were priced at $2.50 or $3.00 each! Will definitely return here!
